Visa and passport information
Facts At a Glance
Passport:
Your Passport must be valid at the time of entry to the country, and for your entire stay. All bureaucratic tasks take an enormous amount of energy and time in India, don't leave anything to chance! There must be a full blank page for an entry stamp.
Visa:
A valid Indian tourist visa is required to enter AND exit the country. You must
obtain one at least four days ahead of your visit. Tourists who will not conduct
business and staying less than 30 days may use the online portal https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/tvoa.html OR visit an Indian embassy or consulate. In a weird twist of fate, the India online Visa portal is CRANKY and you may have to try more than once to complete your transaction.
Don't wait to the last minute!
Restrictions:
US citizens of Pakistani heritage or origin are subject to more extensive processing- expect delays. Every visa applicant will be asked to provide, under oath, your family heritage to obtain a Visa. TripAdvisor maintains a blog about these special concerns.
US Department of State:
